چکیده

We devise a new technique to prove lower bounds for the proof size in resolutiontype calculi for quantified Boolean formulas (QBF). The new technique applies to the strong expansion system IR-calc and thereby also to the most studied QBF system Q-Resolution. Our technique exploits a clear semantic paradigm, showing the hardness of a QBF family by demonstrating that (1) the formulas require large witnessing functions for the universal variables, and (2) in the game semantics of QBF, the universal player is forced to make many responses on a set of variables that we identify as critical. Based on these two conditions, our technique yields a weight for a QBF formula, which provides an absolute lower bound for the size of its IR-calc proofs (and hence also its Q-Resolution proofs). We exemplify our technique on a couple of known and new instances, among them the prominent formulas of Kleine Büning et al. [33], for which our method provides a hardness proof that is considerably simpler than previous approaches. Our technique also provides the first separations for QBF dependency calculi. In particular, we construct a simple class of formulas that are hard for Q-Resolution, but easy in Q-Resolution parameterized by the reflexive resolution path dependency scheme, thus answering a question posed by Slivovsky and Szeider [49].

Genuine Lower Bounds for QBF Expansion

We propose the first general technique for proving genuine lower bounds in the expansion-based QBF proof systems ∀Exp+Res and IR-calc. We present the technique in a framework centred on natural properties of winning strategies in the ‘evaluation game’ interpretation of QBF semantics. As applications, we prove an exponential lower bound on IR-calc proof size for a whole class of formula families...

Size, Cost and Capacity: A Semantic Technique for Hard Random QBFs

As a natural extension of the SAT problem, different proof systems for quantified Boolean formulas (QBF) have been proposed. Many of these extend a propositional system to handle universal quantifiers. By formalising the construction of the QBF proof system P+∀red from a propositional proof system P (Beyersdorff, Bonacina & Chew, ITCS ‘16), we present a new technique for proving proof size lowe...

Reasons for Hardness in Quantified Boolean Formulas

We aim to understand inherent reasons for lower bounds for QBF proof systems, and revisit and compare two previous approaches in this direction. The first of these relates size lower bounds for strong QBF Frege systems to circuit lower bounds via strategy extraction (Beyersdorff & Pich, LICS’16). Here we show a refined version of strategy extraction and thereby for any QBF proof system obtain a...

Proof Complexity of Resolution-based QBF Calculi

Proof systems for quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs) provide a theoretical underpinning for the performance of important QBF solvers. However, the proof complexity of these proof systems is currently not well understood and in particular lower bound techniques are missing. In this paper we exhibit a new and elegant proof technique for showing lower bounds in QBF proof systems based on strategy ...

Feasible Interpolation for QBF Resolution Calculi

In sharp contrast to classical proof complexity we are currently short of lower bound techniques for QBF proof systems. In this paper we establish the feasible interpolation technique for all resolution-based QBF systems, whether modelling CDCL or expansion-based solving. This both provides the first general lower bound method for QBF proof systems as well as largely extends the scope of classi...
